Research & InsightsWhat We've Learned About Helping People Into Work
Summary
Why listening, practical help and realistic expectations matter alongside training.
There is a difference between signing someone up for a course and helping them move towards a job.
A course can be well taught and still be the wrong course for the person taking it. A learner can complete every task and still struggle with interviews, travel, caring responsibilities or confidence. An employer can have vacancies but be unwilling to recruit someone without experience.
These are the kinds of barriers that training organisations have to think about when they work with people whose route into employment has not been straightforward.
FFOP's long involvement in employment and education support is one reason we want to look more closely at the whole process, not just the certificate at the end. That means asking about a learner's goals early, explaining the route ahead honestly and recognising when specialist support or an employer connection is needed.
The Department for Work and Pensions' 2026 research with young people outside work, education and training reinforces the need for that approach. Many respondents wanted personalised help, better access to work experience and support with health and wellbeing.
Three questions worth asking
Is this the right opportunity? A qualification should relate to an achievable next step, not just be available on a funding list.
What might get in the way? Sometimes the issue is confidence or a lack of work experience. Sometimes it is something a training provider cannot solve alone.
What happens when the course finishes? Completion matters, but it should not be the end of the conversation if progression was the reason the learner enrolled.
No organisation can promise a job to every participant. What it can do is be clear about what support it offers, work with others where necessary and measure more than the number of people who started a course.
Over time, FFOP intends to publish further accounts of its work, including the outcomes and lessons from individual projects once the evidence has been brought together.
